What is Spyware?

Spyware can be described as software that has installed in a user's computer without their knowledge or informed consent. Adware is free software that is loaded onto a user's computer, typically with their permission. Installation of Adware is usually voluntary as the software provides a useful product or service. What is the difference between Spyware and Adware?

Whilst Adware is usually installed with the user's permission, both Adware and Spyware may be installed without the user's permission. Whilst both Adware and Spyware track the user's internet usage, the main difference between Adware and Spyware is that Adware's main purpose is to display targeted advertising based on the user behaviour it is tracking. Spyware does not display ads.

Most people would not like their personal internet usage information, including personal data to be tracked. Most internet users find the advertising banners and pop-ups very annoying.
